Looking Back on 2020

Don’t worry. I’m not gonna ask you to list out your 2020 accomplishments or guilt-trip you if you didn’t achieve every single goal you set for yourself waaaaay back in January.

This year has been a real challenge (to put it mildly) – and we all know it.

If you’re anything like me, you’re looking back and asking yourself ‘WTF?’ enough as it is.

So, however this year has turned out for you, I’m proud of you, I believe in you, and I’m here to support you.

This year feels like it’s been a reckoning in a lot of ways. And I want us all to come out on the other side a little better in some way.

So, I’m encouraging anyone and everyone reading this to be mindful about the decisions you make right now and in the early days of 2021. Be sure your decisions and actions represent who you want to be.

At this point, I want to emphasize the importance of self-reflection. Reflecting on who we each have been as a person this year and making some decisions about who we want to be moving forward.

As a part of this self-reflection, I like to look at my thoughts, my patterns, my actions/behaviors…and the things I allow to influence either or both. This extends to the people I surround myself with, and understanding how that shapes my worldview.

I’m a firm believer that if you want to get better at something, it’s important to surround yourself with people who are better than you at that thing.

So, if you want to work on being a better person (which, hopefully we all do), then it’s important to surround yourself with people who are ‘better’ than you in some way.

  • If you want to be better at your work, surround yourself with people who are better than you at the work you do.
  • If you want to be a better parent, surround yourself with amazing parents.
  • If you want to be more empathetic, surround yourself with people who are different from you and who represent diverse worldviews.

In your job search:

  • Choose companies whose mission and vision (and executive leadership team and actions within the market and treatment of employees) align with what you believe in.
  • Choose roles that let you affect positive change in a way that feels right to you.
  • Choose opportunities that pull you out of your comfort zone in some way – and focus on the value you get from those experiences.

In your career:

  • Choose to surround yourself with diverse people who have diverse experiences, value, and ideas – not just an echo chamber of the things you already believe.
  • Choose to follow leaders who lead by example and walk-the-walk whenever they can.
  • Choose to push for what you know is right in company culture, operations, and leadership.

I believe we all want to be better people, and I hope you’ll join me in pushing myself to be a better person moving into 2021 and beyond.
