Social Media and Your Job Search

SOCIAL MEDIA AND YOUR JOB SEARCH

In today’s competitive job market, your online presence is equally as important as your resume, cover letter, and even your interview skills! As a modern job search candidate, understand that you are your online profile. You must take great care to ensure all aspects of your online image are a professional representation of yourself.

Entrepreneur/businesswoman/attorney Monica Zent wrote all about this in a recent, very informative article entitled, “How Social Media Can Make or Break Your Job Search.”

Here’s her bottom line:

“Gone are the days when sprucing up your resume was enough. Today, recruiters have much more information about you at their disposal than just what is on your CV. As recruiters overwhelmingly turn online to find and vet job candidates, it’s essential that you polish up your resume and your social media presence.”

She really hits the nail on the head with this statement. The majority of employers I’ve worked with over the last several years have told me that they look to social media regularly as a part of their candidate vetting process.  While it can be confusing to try to determine the best ways to ensure your online profile will pass the test, Ms. Zent breaks the basics down into 4 simple commandments:

  1. Keep it Clean
  2. Create a Solid LinkedIn Presence
  3. Create Expert Content for Your Social Channels
  4. Consider the Complete Social Media Picture

The 2nd commandment, “Create a Solid LinkedIn Account”, is becoming increasingly more important. According to the 2014 Jobvite Job Seeker Nation Study, 94% of recruiters are actively using LinkedIn! And because the employer and recruiter views are set up differently from the basic individual view, it is important that job seekers understand how to set up their LinkedIn profiles correctly.

I now offer properly formatted, professional, and eye-catching LinkedIn profiles based on employer and recruiter usage! Having a compelling resume is a great start to a successful job search – but if you don’t have an equally compelling LinkedIn Profile, are you really utilizing all the resources at your disposal? Your competition certainly is!!
